Kingfisher native Nick Smith went three-for-four as the Oklahoma City Athletics dropped the Enid Majors into the losers bracket of the Connie Mack State Tournament, defeating Enid 11-5 Friday at David Allen Memorial Ballpark.
The Majors play the Enid Minors — a 3-1 loser to the Woodward Majors earlier Friday — at 6 p.m. Friday in an elimination game.
The Athletics had 11 hits to go with eight walks and two hit batters. Oklahoma City scored five runs in both the third and sixth inning. Enid was within a run of the Athletics after scoring four runs in the fourth to cut the lead to 6-5.
The Majors left nine runners on base, including the bases loaded in the fourth and sixth innings. Six Enid pitchers combined to throw 170 pitches in the game, which took two hours and 39 minutes.
“I’m surprised we didn’t get beat worse than we did,’’ said Enid head coach Chris Jensen. “That hadn’t been our M.O. this summer, but we’re going to come back and regroup and be ready to go tonight.’’
Christian Voitik will pitch for the Majors, who have beaten the Minors three times this season.
“The intensity of both dugouts will probably be a little higher than normal.’’ Jensen said.
Seth Graves and Kyle Love both had two RBI for the Athletics. Love scored three runs. Easton Fenton scored twice. Jake McKinnon was two-for-five.
Brady Kokojan was 2-for-3 with three RBI for the Majors. He had a double in the first, a sacrifice fly for an RBI in the third and a two-RBI single in the fourth.
Jonathan Castillo had an RBI single in the fourth, while Xavier Sundman had a bases-loaded walk.
Cooper Skluzucek took the loss for the Majors, now 36-13.
